NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) is Nikon's proprietary RAW image format, introduced in 1999 with the Nikon D1 — one of the first professional digital SLR cameras affordable enough to see widespread newsroom adoption. One advantage is the enormous ecosystem of compatible software: NEF is among the most widely supported RAW formats worldwide, handled by Adobe Lightroom, Capture One, DxO, Nikon's own NX Studio, and virtually every RAW-capable application, reflecting Nikon's position as one of the two dominant professional camera brands through the entire digital photography era.
