About formats

PPM (Portable Pixmap) is the full-color member of the Netpbm image format family, created by Jef Poskanzer in 1988 as part of the Pbmplus toolkit for Unix systems. PPM stores RGB color images where each pixel contains three values (red, green, blue) ranging from 0 to a specified maximum, typically 255 for 8-bit-per-channel or 65535 for 16-bit-per-channel color. The format exists in ASCII (magic number P3), where pixel values are written as decimal numbers in row-major order, and binary (magic number P6), where values are stored as raw bytes for compact representation. Both variants begin with a plain-text header: magic number, width, height, and maximum color value. PPM completes the Netpbm trio alongside PBM (monochrome) and PGM (grayscale), serving as the universal color image intermediate in the convert-process-convert pipeline that defined Netpbm's approach to format interoperability. One advantage is absolute simplicity — PPM requires no compression libraries, container parsing, or metadata handling, making it the easiest full-color format to implement from scratch in any programming language. The format's widespread adoption in scientific computing and computer graphics education is another practical strength: PPM serves as a standard I/O format for ray tracers, image processing coursework, and visualization tools where implementation simplicity outweighs file size concerns. PPM is supported by ImageMagick, GIMP, and virtually all image processing libraries.

EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is a vector file format developed by Adobe Systems in collaboration with Aldus Corporation, first published in 1987. Built on Adobe's PostScript page description language, EPS wraps a self-contained PostScript program describing a single page of graphics — including vector paths, text, and embedded raster images — within a structured comment framework that provides bounding box coordinates and optional preview thumbnails. The encapsulation allows an EPS file to be placed into another document as a contained graphic element without interfering with the host document's PostScript code. For decades, EPS served as the universal exchange format in professional publishing, prepress, and print production, accepted by virtually every design, illustration, and page layout application across platforms. One key advantage is print-industry reliability — because EPS contains device-independent PostScript instructions, output is consistent across different RIPs, imagesetters, and printing presses. The format's cross-application compatibility is another strength: an EPS file created in Illustrator, CorelDRAW, or Inkscape can be placed in QuarkXPress, InDesign, or Word without requiring the originating application. While PDF has largely superseded EPS for modern workflows, the format remains widely used in stock illustration libraries, legacy publishing pipelines, and any context requiring a proven, universally supported vector exchange format.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PPM to EPS?

EPS offers print-ready vector — converting from raster PPM gives you scalable output for print and design work.

What programs open EPS files?

EPS files are supported by Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, Ghostscript, CorelDRAW. Pick whichever application suits your operating system and workflow.

Does batch conversion to EPS work?

Batch processing is available. Upload several PPM files and produce individual EPS outputs for each one.

Will the output be truly scalable?

Yes — EPS files are resolution-independent. You can scale the output to any size without pixelation or quality loss.

Can I edit the EPS file afterward?

The EPS format allows editing in compatible applications. You can adjust elements, change colors, and refine the design.
