One advantage is substantial file size reduction — lossy WebP produces images 25-35% smaller than JPEG at equivalent visual quality, and lossless WebP is typically 26% smaller than PNG, directly improving web page loading speed and reducing bandwidth costs. Universal browser support provides another key strength: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and all mobile browsers now render WebP natively, achieving the broad adoption threshold needed for practical deployment. Google's core web infrastructure (Search, YouTube thumbnails, Gmail) uses WebP extensively, and the format is supported by major CDN platforms, CMS systems, and image processing services. WebP has established itself as the primary modern alternative to JPEG and PNG for web content.
