Color Netpbm Format

PPM is the standard color format in the Netpbm ecosystem — your XLSX renders as a full-color image for processing scripts.

Cloud Processing

Conversion runs on remote servers — no Netpbm toolkit needed on your machine.

Data Privacy

Your XLSX is erased after processing. PPM outputs are purged within 24 hours.

About formats

XLSX is the default spreadsheet format for Microsoft Excel since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML (OOXML) standard published as ECMA-376 and adopted as ISO/IEC 29500. An XLSX file is a ZIP archive containing XML documents that describe workbook structure, sheet data, styles, shared strings, formulas, charts, pivot tables, and relationships between components. Each worksheet is stored as a separate XML part where cells are organized by row and column references with typed values and style indices. The XML foundation enables programmatic spreadsheet creation and manipulation using libraries like openpyxl (Python), Apache POI (Java), and ClosedXML (.NET) without requiring Excel. XLSX dramatically expanded capacity compared to XLS: over 1 million rows and 16,384 columns per sheet, enabling use cases previously impossible in the binary format. One advantage is openness and cross-platform support — the documented OOXML specification enables implementation by LibreOffice Calc, Google Sheets, Apple Numbers, and numerous specialized tools. Built-in ZIP compression is another practical strength: XLSX files are typically 50-75% smaller than equivalent XLS files, and the modular XML structure improves data recovery when files are partially corrupted. The format supports modern Excel features including structured tables, slicers, sparklines, Power Query connections, and real-time co-authoring. XLSX has become the standard format for spreadsheet data interchange across business, scientific, and government domains.

PPM (Portable Pixmap) is the full-color member of the Netpbm image format family, created by Jef Poskanzer in 1988 as part of the Pbmplus toolkit for Unix systems. PPM stores RGB color images where each pixel contains three values (red, green, blue) ranging from 0 to a specified maximum, typically 255 for 8-bit-per-channel or 65535 for 16-bit-per-channel color. The format exists in ASCII (magic number P3), where pixel values are written as decimal numbers in row-major order, and binary (magic number P6), where values are stored as raw bytes for compact representation. Both variants begin with a plain-text header: magic number, width, height, and maximum color value. PPM completes the Netpbm trio alongside PBM (monochrome) and PGM (grayscale), serving as the universal color image intermediate in the convert-process-convert pipeline that defined Netpbm's approach to format interoperability. One advantage is absolute simplicity — PPM requires no compression libraries, container parsing, or metadata handling, making it the easiest full-color format to implement from scratch in any programming language. The format's widespread adoption in scientific computing and computer graphics education is another practical strength: PPM serves as a standard I/O format for ray tracers, image processing coursework, and visualization tools where implementation simplicity outweighs file size concerns. PPM is supported by ImageMagick, GIMP, and virtually all image processing libraries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert XLSX to PPM?

PPM is the color format in the Netpbm family — widely used as an intermediate format in Unix image processing pipelines.

What opens PPM files?

GIMP, ImageMagick, IrfanView, Netpbm tools, and most Linux desktop image viewers handle PPM files natively.

Is PPM compressed?

PPM can be ASCII or binary but is essentially uncompressed. Files are larger but trivially simple to parse in scripts.

Is this free?

Basic conversions are free. Premium plans extend limits for image processing workflows.

Can I convert on any device?

Yes — Convertio works in any browser on any operating system without installation.

Is my file protected?

Uploaded XLSX is deleted after conversion. PPM outputs are removed within 24 hours.
