About formats

PSD (Photoshop Document) is the native file format of Adobe Photoshop, the industry-standard raster image editor first released on February 19, 1990. PSD files preserve the complete editing state of a Photoshop project: all layers (raster, text, adjustment, shape, and smart object layers) with their positions, blending modes, opacity, and layer effects; layer masks and vector masks; alpha channels; spot color channels; paths; guides; slices; and the full undo history. The format supports images up to 30,000 x 30,000 pixels (PSB, the large document format, extends this to 300,000 x 300,000) in color modes including RGB, CMYK, Lab, Grayscale, Indexed, Duotone, and Multichannel, at 1, 8, 16, or 32 bits per channel. PSD files use a combination of RLE compression for individual layer data and store composite (flattened) preview images for quick display by applications that cannot parse the full layer structure. The format has become a de facto standard for professional creative workflows far beyond Photoshop itself — photographers, graphic designers, web developers, and video post-production artists exchange PSD files as the working format that preserves creative flexibility. One advantage is the non-destructive editing model: PSD preserves every layer, mask, adjustment, and effect as independently editable elements, allowing creative decisions to be revised at any point without starting over. The format's role as the interchange standard for the creative industry provides another core strength — PSD files can be opened by Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, Premiere Pro, as well as Affinity Photo, GIMP, Sketch, Figma, and Photopea, making it the lingua franca of visual design.

EMF (Enhanced Metafile) is a vector graphics format developed by Microsoft as the successor to WMF (Windows Metafile), introduced with Windows NT 3.1 in July 1993. EMF records a sequence of GDI (Graphics Device Interface) function calls that describe vector shapes, text, embedded bitmaps, and rendering attributes in a device-independent manner. Unlike WMF's 16-bit coordinate system limited to 65,536 units, EMF uses 32-bit coordinates and adds support for Bezier curves, advanced path operations, world coordinate transforms, gradient fills, and extended text capabilities including Unicode. The format functions as a graphics recording mechanism — applications capture their drawing operations into an EMF file, which can then be replayed at any scale on any device with full geometric precision. One advantage is native Windows integration: EMF is the standard clipboard and spooler format for vector content across the Windows ecosystem, enabling lossless copy-paste of graphics between Office documents, design tools, and presentation software without rasterization. Resolution independence is another key strength — EMF graphics scale smoothly from screen display to high-resolution print output. An extended variant, EMF+, introduced with GDI+ adds anti-aliasing, alpha transparency, and advanced brush types. EMF remains deeply embedded in Windows-based publishing, technical documentation, and enterprise document workflows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PSD to EMF?

EMF is built for embedding graphics in Office documents — your Photoshop artwork stays sharp at any zoom level in Word and PowerPoint presentations.

What applications support EMF files?

Microsoft Office suite, LibreOffice, Inkscape, and virtually all Windows-based graphics programs can open, display, and edit Enhanced Metafile images.

Does EMF maintain quality when resized?

Yes — EMF metafiles scale cleanly in Office documents because the format stores rendering instructions rather than just fixed pixel data.

Is EMF a vector or raster format?

EMF is a metafile capable of holding both vector and raster content. Converting from PSD produces an EMF with high-quality embedded bitmap data.

Is PSD to EMF conversion free?

Yes — Convertio provides free PSD to EMF conversion for standard files. Premium plans add batch processing and priority conversion for larger projects.
