About formats

DST (Tajima) is a machine embroidery file format created by Tajima Industries, one of the world's leading manufacturers of commercial embroidery equipment. The format encodes stitch data as a sequence of relative coordinate movements, with each stitch record containing a horizontal offset, vertical offset, and a command flag indicating the stitch type — normal stitch, jump (move without stitching), color change, or stop. DST files use a compact binary encoding where each stitch occupies three bytes, making the format efficient for storing complex multi-color designs with tens of thousands of stitches. The coordinate system uses 0.1 mm increments with a maximum single-stitch length of 12.1 mm in any direction. DST has become the de facto standard in the commercial embroidery industry — virtually every embroidery machine from any manufacturer can read DST files, making it the most widely supported embroidery format in existence. One advantage is universal machine compatibility: a DST file will run reliably on Tajima, Barudan, SWF, Brother, and Melco machines alike, eliminating format conversion concerns. The minimal file structure is another strength — files are compact, load instantly even on older machine controllers with limited memory, and their simplicity makes them resistant to corruption during transfer. While DST lacks embedded metadata like thread color names and design previews, this limitation is offset by the format's unmatched portability across the global embroidery industry.

EMF (Enhanced Metafile) is a vector graphics format developed by Microsoft as the successor to WMF (Windows Metafile), introduced with Windows NT 3.1 in July 1993. EMF records a sequence of GDI (Graphics Device Interface) function calls that describe vector shapes, text, embedded bitmaps, and rendering attributes in a device-independent manner. Unlike WMF's 16-bit coordinate system limited to 65,536 units, EMF uses 32-bit coordinates and adds support for Bezier curves, advanced path operations, world coordinate transforms, gradient fills, and extended text capabilities including Unicode. The format functions as a graphics recording mechanism — applications capture their drawing operations into an EMF file, which can then be replayed at any scale on any device with full geometric precision. One advantage is native Windows integration: EMF is the standard clipboard and spooler format for vector content across the Windows ecosystem, enabling lossless copy-paste of graphics between Office documents, design tools, and presentation software without rasterization. Resolution independence is another key strength — EMF graphics scale smoothly from screen display to high-resolution print output. An extended variant, EMF+, introduced with GDI+ adds anti-aliasing, alpha transparency, and advanced brush types. EMF remains deeply embedded in Windows-based publishing, technical documentation, and enterprise document workflows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert DST to EMF?

EMF is a Windows vector format that embeds well in Office documents — ideal for placing embroidery designs into reports or slides.

What opens EMF files?

Microsoft Office apps, Windows Photo Viewer, LibreOffice, and vector editors like Inkscape all support EMF natively.

Is DST to EMF conversion lossless?

The converter renders stitch data as vector paths in EMF. Quality depends on the original DST detail, not the conversion.

Can I embed the EMF in a Word document?

Yes — EMF is designed for embedding in Windows documents and scales cleanly when inserted into Word, PowerPoint, or Excel.

How secure is the conversion?

Your DST file is deleted immediately after conversion, and the EMF output is removed from servers within 24 hours.

Is there any charge for this conversion?

Convertio offers DST to EMF conversion free of charge. No registration or payment needed for standard conversions.
