About formats

MOBI is an ebook format originally developed by Mobipocket SA, a French company founded in 2000 that was later acquired by Amazon in 2005. The format builds on the PalmDOC/PDB container structure, adding support for HTML-based content markup, embedded images, a DRM layer, and a JavaScript subset for limited interactivity. MOBI files use a record-based database architecture inherited from Palm OS, with a header structure containing metadata like title, author, publisher, and language followed by compressed HTML content records. The format became the foundation of Amazon's early Kindle ecosystem — the original AZW format used on first-generation Kindles was essentially MOBI with Amazon's own DRM wrapper. MOBI supports reflowable text with basic formatting including bold, italic, headings, lists, and tables, as well as internal hyperlinks and a built-in table of contents. One advantage is broad device compatibility: MOBI files are recognized by Kindle devices and apps spanning over a decade of hardware, as well as numerous third-party readers on desktop and mobile platforms. The format's lightweight structure is another strength — even long novels produce compact files that load quickly on modest hardware. While Amazon has since moved to the more capable AZW3/KF8 format for new publishing, MOBI remains widely circulated in existing ebook libraries and continues to be produced by conversion tools like Calibre for maximum Kindle compatibility.

DOCX is the default document format for Microsoft Word since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML (OOXML) standard published as ECMA-376 and adopted as ISO/IEC 29500. A DOCX file is a ZIP archive containing XML documents that describe the document body (document.xml), styles, themes, headers, footers, footnotes, comments, numbering definitions, and relationships between parts. Media assets like images and embedded objects reside in dedicated directories within the package. The XML structure means document content is human-inspectable and programmable — developers can create, modify, and extract content from DOCX files using standard XML libraries in any programming language without requiring Word. One significant advantage is openness and interoperability: the published specification enables any software to implement DOCX support, and the format is read and written by LibreOffice, Google Docs, Apple Pages, and dozens of other tools across all platforms. Built-in ZIP compression is another practical strength — DOCX files are substantially smaller than equivalent DOC files, and the modular XML structure improves crash recovery since corruption in one part does not necessarily destroy the entire document. The format supports all modern Word capabilities including SmartArt, content controls, bibliography management, accessibility metadata, and real-time co-authoring. DOCX has become the universal standard for document interchange in business, education, and government.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert MOBI to DOCX?

DOCX makes your ebook content fully editable in Word or Google Docs — ideal for revising, reformatting, or repurposing text from a MOBI file.

How do I open a DOCX file?

Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer, and Apple Pages all open DOCX files. It is the most widely supported document format today.

Does the conversion keep images from my ebook?

Yes — embedded images carry over to the DOCX output alongside your text, so the document reflects the original ebook content faithfully.

Can I edit the DOCX and convert it back to an ebook format?

Of course. After editing in Word, you can use Convertio again to convert the DOCX into EPUB, AZW3, or another ebook format you prefer.

Is formatting preserved when going from MOBI to DOCX?

Text styling, paragraphs, and headings are maintained. Complex ebook-specific layouts may simplify slightly in the Word document format.
