About formats

DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is a CAD data file format developed by Autodesk, first released in December 1982 with AutoCAD 1.0 to enable interoperability between AutoCAD and other programs. The format exists in two variants: ASCII DXF, a human-readable text file organized into sections (HEADER, TABLES, BLOCKS, ENTITIES, OBJECTS), and binary DXF for faster parsing. Each geometric entity — lines, arcs, circles, polylines, splines, text, dimensions, and 3D solids — is described by group codes paired with values specifying coordinates and properties. DXF versions evolve alongside AutoCAD releases, adding support for new features with each edition. One major advantage is universal CAD compatibility — DXF is supported by virtually every CAD, CAM, and engineering application across all platforms, making it the most widely accepted exchange format for technical drawings. The ASCII variant provides another strength: drawings can be inspected, debugged, and generated programmatically using text processing tools or scripts. DXF serves as a critical bridge enabling architects, engineers, and manufacturers to share precise technical drawings regardless of which software each party uses, and remains the standard for cross-platform CAD data exchange.

CGM (Computer Graphics Metafile) is a vector graphics standard defined by ISO 8632, first published in 1987 and developed through the ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 24 committee. The standard defines a device-independent format for storing and transferring two-dimensional vector graphics, raster images, and text. CGM supports three encoding methods: character encoding (compact text representation), binary encoding (efficient machine-readable form), and clear-text encoding (human-readable for debugging). The format describes graphical primitives including polylines, polygons, ellipses, circular arcs, splines, and text with associated attributes for color, line style, fill patterns, and clipping boundaries. CGM found its strongest adoption in technical documentation, particularly in aerospace, defense, and industrial sectors where long-term archival and precise technical illustration are critical. One advantage is formal standardization — as an ISO standard, CGM provides vendor-neutral, specification-driven interoperability guaranteed across compliant implementations. The format's adoption in specialized industries is another practical strength: WebCGM, a W3C profile of CGM, became the mandated illustration format for interactive electronic technical manuals in the aerospace industry (ATA iSpec 2200), ensuring CGM's continued relevance in aviation maintenance documentation. While general-purpose vector work has moved to SVG and PDF, CGM persists in regulated industries where certified, standards-based graphics interchange is mandatory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert DXF to CGM?

CGM is an ISO standard (ISO 8632) widely used in aviation, defense, and technical publishing. Converting DXF to CGM meets strict documentation requirements.

What software reads CGM files?

CGM viewers from Larson Software Technology, Corel, and many technical illustration tools handle CGM. Web browsers with plugins can also display them.

Is the output compliant with ISO 8632?

The conversion produces standard CGM output. For sector-specific profiles like WebCGM or ATA, verify compliance with your organization requirements.

Does converting DXF to CGM cost anything?

No — Convertio provides free DXF to CGM conversion. Paid plans offer expanded capacity and batch support.

How accurate is the vector conversion?

DXF geometry maps to CGM primitives with solid precision. Lines, arcs, and text elements translate cleanly into the CGM structure.

Can this run on any operating system?

The converter is web-based and works on Windows, macOS, Linux, and mobile platforms — no platform restrictions.
