About formats

DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is a CAD data file format developed by Autodesk, first released in December 1982 with AutoCAD 1.0 to enable interoperability between AutoCAD and other programs. The format exists in two variants: ASCII DXF, a human-readable text file organized into sections (HEADER, TABLES, BLOCKS, ENTITIES, OBJECTS), and binary DXF for faster parsing. Each geometric entity — lines, arcs, circles, polylines, splines, text, dimensions, and 3D solids — is described by group codes paired with values specifying coordinates and properties. DXF versions evolve alongside AutoCAD releases, adding support for new features with each edition. One major advantage is universal CAD compatibility — DXF is supported by virtually every CAD, CAM, and engineering application across all platforms, making it the most widely accepted exchange format for technical drawings. The ASCII variant provides another strength: drawings can be inspected, debugged, and generated programmatically using text processing tools or scripts. DXF serves as a critical bridge enabling architects, engineers, and manufacturers to share precise technical drawings regardless of which software each party uses, and remains the standard for cross-platform CAD data exchange.

CUR is the cursor image format for Microsoft Windows, structurally nearly identical to the ICO (icon) format but with the addition of a hotspot coordinate that identifies the precise pixel position where mouse clicks register. Introduced with early Windows versions, CUR files use the same container structure as ICO: a directory header listing one or more image entries, each specifying dimensions and color depth, followed by the pixel data for each variant. Like ICO, a single CUR file can contain multiple images at different sizes and color depths, allowing Windows to select the most appropriate cursor image for the current display resolution and color settings. Image data within CUR files can be stored as BMP pixel arrays (for legacy compatibility) or as embedded PNG images (supported since Windows Vista) for alpha-blended cursors with smooth edges. The hotspot coordinate — the distinguishing feature separating CUR from ICO — is stored as an X,Y pair in the directory entry header, typically pointing to the tip of an arrow or the center of a crosshair. One advantage is multi-resolution packaging: a single CUR file provides appropriate cursor imagery across display densities from standard DPI to high-DPI screens. Native Windows integration is another strength — CUR files are loaded directly by the operating system for mouse cursor display without any third-party software. CUR files are used by application developers and theme creators to customize the pointing experience across Windows environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert DXF to CUR?

CUR is the Windows cursor format. Converting DXF to CUR lets designers turn precise vector artwork into custom mouse pointers with hotspot support.

What program opens CUR files?

Windows uses CUR files natively for cursors. For editing, tools like RealWorld Cursor Editor, Greenfish Icon Editor, and IrfanView handle CUR.

Can I set the cursor hotspot after conversion?

The conversion produces the CUR image data. For fine-tuning hotspot position, open the CUR in a dedicated cursor editor afterward.

Is DXF to CUR conversion free on Convertio?

Yes, the base conversion is free. Premium plans provide more capacity if you are converting large batches of cursor designs.

Does this work on Mac or Linux?

The converter itself is browser-based and runs on any OS. The resulting CUR file is a Windows-specific format, but can be edited cross-platform.

Are my design files kept confidential?

Uploaded DXF files are purged right after the conversion finishes. CUR output is deleted from servers within 24 hours automatically.
