About formats

DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is a CAD data file format developed by Autodesk, first released in December 1982 with AutoCAD 1.0 to enable interoperability between AutoCAD and other programs. The format exists in two variants: ASCII DXF, a human-readable text file organized into sections (HEADER, TABLES, BLOCKS, ENTITIES, OBJECTS), and binary DXF for faster parsing. Each geometric entity — lines, arcs, circles, polylines, splines, text, dimensions, and 3D solids — is described by group codes paired with values specifying coordinates and properties. DXF versions evolve alongside AutoCAD releases, adding support for new features with each edition. One major advantage is universal CAD compatibility — DXF is supported by virtually every CAD, CAM, and engineering application across all platforms, making it the most widely accepted exchange format for technical drawings. The ASCII variant provides another strength: drawings can be inspected, debugged, and generated programmatically using text processing tools or scripts. DXF serves as a critical bridge enabling architects, engineers, and manufacturers to share precise technical drawings regardless of which software each party uses, and remains the standard for cross-platform CAD data exchange.

PGX is a simple single-component raster image format defined as part of the JPEG 2000 standard (ISO/IEC 15444) for use in conformance testing and verification of JPEG 2000 codec implementations. Introduced around 2000 alongside the JPEG 2000 specification itself, PGX files store a single image component (one color channel or grayscale plane) with a text header followed by raw pixel data, providing an unambiguous reference representation against which encoder and decoder outputs can be compared sample by sample. The header is a single ASCII line specifying endianness (ML for big-endian, LM for little-endian), signedness (+ for unsigned, - for signed), bit depth (1 to 32 bits), width, and height. The pixel data follows as raw binary values, each occupying the minimum number of bytes needed for the specified bit depth, with one value per pixel. For multi-component images (like RGB), each component is stored in a separate PGX file. The format's deliberate simplicity — no compression, no metadata, no multi-channel support — ensures there are no ambiguities in interpretation that could mask codec bugs. One advantage is verification precision: PGX's uncompressed, exactly-specified representation allows bit-exact comparison of decoded JPEG 2000 output against reference images, essential for certifying that a codec implementation conforms to the standard. The format's role in the JPEG 2000 conformance testing framework means it is implemented by every serious JPEG 2000 codec (OpenJPEG, Kakadu, etc.) and used in the official ISO conformance test suite. PGX files can also be processed by ImageMagick and various JPEG 2000 development tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert DXF to PGX?

PGX is the reference format for JPEG 2000 conformance testing. Converting DXF to PGX lets you feed CAD-derived images into codec validation.

What programs open PGX files?

PGX files are read by JPEG 2000 reference software such as OpenJPEG, as well as specialized image analysis and codec testing tools.

Is the vector data preserved in PGX?

DXF vectors are rasterized into a single-component image. The PGX output captures pixel values — vector geometry becomes raster data.

Is DXF to PGX conversion free?

Yes, the conversion is free for regular use. Upgrade to a premium plan if you need larger file allowances or faster processing queues.

Does this converter work on mobile?

It does. The tool is fully cloud-based, so a phone or tablet browser handles DXF to PGX conversion just as well as a desktop.
