About formats

DOCX is the default document format for Microsoft Word since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML (OOXML) standard published as ECMA-376 and adopted as ISO/IEC 29500. A DOCX file is a ZIP archive containing XML documents that describe the document body (document.xml), styles, themes, headers, footers, footnotes, comments, numbering definitions, and relationships between parts. Media assets like images and embedded objects reside in dedicated directories within the package. The XML structure means document content is human-inspectable and programmable — developers can create, modify, and extract content from DOCX files using standard XML libraries in any programming language without requiring Word. One significant advantage is openness and interoperability: the published specification enables any software to implement DOCX support, and the format is read and written by LibreOffice, Google Docs, Apple Pages, and dozens of other tools across all platforms. Built-in ZIP compression is another practical strength — DOCX files are substantially smaller than equivalent DOC files, and the modular XML structure improves crash recovery since corruption in one part does not necessarily destroy the entire document. The format supports all modern Word capabilities including SmartArt, content controls, bibliography management, accessibility metadata, and real-time co-authoring. DOCX has become the universal standard for document interchange in business, education, and government.

PCX (PiCture eXchange) is a raster image format created by ZSoft Corporation in 1985 as the native format of their PC Paintbrush application, one of the first painting programs for IBM PC compatibles. The format uses a simple run-length encoding (RLE) compression scheme that works by replacing consecutive identical pixel values with a count-value pair, achieving modest compression on images with large areas of uniform color. A PCX file consists of a 128-byte header (specifying dimensions, color depth, palette information, DPI, and encoding method), the RLE-compressed pixel data organized in scan-line order, and an optional 256-color palette appended after the image data. The format evolved through several versions supporting increasing color depths: 1-bit monochrome, 4-bit (16 colors), 8-bit (256 colors), and 24-bit true color using multiple color planes. PCX became one of the most popular image formats during the DOS era, widely supported by paint programs, word processors, desktop publishers, and early games throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s. One advantage was broad DOS-era software compatibility — PCX served as a practical interchange format when competing programs used proprietary raster formats. The simplicity of RLE decoding is another strength, requiring minimal CPU and memory resources ideal for the hardware of that period. While PNG, JPEG, and other modern formats have replaced PCX in contemporary use, the format remains encountered in legacy archives and retro computing contexts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert DOCX to PCX?

PCX is a legacy bitmap format still used in some specialized printing and scanning workflows — converting DOCX provides compatibility with these systems.

What programs open PCX files?

PCX files open in IrfanView, XnView, GIMP, Adobe Photoshop, and many legacy imaging applications that support the format.

Is PCX still widely used?

PCX has been largely replaced by PNG and TIFF for most uses, but remains relevant in certain legacy systems and specialized applications.

Are all pages of the DOCX converted?

Every page becomes a separate PCX image — the entire document is processed regardless of its length.

Is there a cost for this conversion?

DOCX to PCX conversion is free on Convertio. Paid options are available for users needing expanded capabilities.
