About formats

DOCM is a macro-enabled document format for Microsoft Word, introduced with Office 2007 as part of the Office Open XML family. Structurally identical to DOCX — a ZIP archive containing XML parts for document content, styles, themes, and media — DOCM adds the ability to store and execute VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) macro code within the document. The separate .docm extension was a deliberate security measure: users and administrators can distinguish macro-containing files by extension alone, and group policies can restrict macro-enabled formats while allowing standard DOCX documents to open freely. DOCM files store VBA projects in a vbaProject.bin stream within the ZIP package alongside the same XML document content used by DOCX. Macros in Word documents enable automated report generation, custom form processing, document assembly from templates and data sources, and integration with external systems. One advantage is document-level automation — a DOCM file can include routines that populate content from databases, enforce formatting rules, validate fields before submission, or generate derivative documents automatically. The format preserves full compatibility with the OOXML specification, so all standard Word features — styles, tracked changes, comments, embedded media — work identically to DOCX. DOCM is supported by Microsoft Word on Windows and macOS, with macro execution limited to the desktop application.

FB2 (FictionBook) is an XML-based ebook format created by Dmitry Gribov in 2004, designed to provide a clean semantic description of a book's content independent of its visual presentation. Unlike page-layout formats, FB2 encodes structure — title, authors, chapters, annotations, genres, epigraphs, poems, footnotes, and binary attachments (typically cover images) — within a single well-formed XML document. This structural approach means reading applications have full control over rendering, allowing the same file to adapt perfectly to a small phone screen or a large e-ink reader. FB2 became enormously popular in Russia and Eastern Europe, serving as the dominant format on major Russian digital libraries and ebook distribution platforms. One significant advantage is metadata richness: the format's schema mandates detailed bibliographic information including author, translator, series position, publication date, and genre classification, making library management and discovery straightforward. The plain-text XML foundation is another strength — FB2 files are human-readable, easy to validate, and simple to transform using standard XML tools like XSLT. The format specification is freely available on GitHub, and a wide ecosystem of readers, editors, and converters supports it across all major platforms, from desktop applications like Calibre to dedicated e-readers with native FB2 rendering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert DOCM to FB2?

FB2 is widely used in Russian-speaking ebook markets. Its XML structure preserves rich metadata and clean chapter organization.

What devices open FB2?

PocketBook, FBReader, CoolReader, Moon+ Reader, and many Android and desktop reading apps handle FB2 natively without conversion.

Does formatting transfer to FB2?

Headings, paragraphs, bold/italic text, and images carry over. FB2 focuses on semantic structure over visual layout.

Are macros removed?

Yes — FB2 is a pure XML reading format with no executable code. All VBA macros from the DOCM are excluded from the output.

Is DOCM to FB2 free?

Basic conversion is free on Convertio. Premium tiers offer larger file limits and faster processing for book-length manuscripts.

Can I read FB2 on Kindle?

Not directly — Kindle requires AZW3 or MOBI. But most other e-readers and reading apps support FB2 out of the box.
