About formats

CAF (Core Audio Format) is a flexible audio container developed by Apple and introduced with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger in 2005. Built to overcome limitations of older formats, CAF eliminates the 4 GB file size ceiling that constrains WAV and AIFF, theoretically supporting unlimited length. The container accommodates virtually any codec — AAC, ALAC, MP3, linear PCM, IMA ADPCM, and more — within a unified wrapper. Its chunk-based architecture stores audio alongside rich metadata including channel layouts, marker regions, annotations, and MIDI data. A defining advantage is handling extremely long recordings: broadcasters and field recordists can capture hours of continuous audio without size boundaries. Flexible codec support is another strength, as one container works whether the content is high-resolution 24-bit/192 kHz lossless audio or compressed speech. Apple's Core Audio framework provides native support on macOS and iOS, ensuring low-latency playback in professional applications like Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro. For Apple ecosystem workflows requiring both versatility and scale, CAF is an exceptionally capable choice.

AU is an audio file format introduced by Sun Microsystems for its Unix workstations and the NeXT platform. It features a minimal 24-byte header specifying data offset, size, encoding type, sample rate, and channel count, followed by the audio payload. AU supports numerous encodings, including uncompressed linear PCM at various bit depths, mu-law and A-law companding (logarithmic compression used in telephone systems), and several ADPCM variants. This versatility made AU a workhorse across early Unix environments, web audio (Java applets defaulted to AU), and telephony applications. One advantage is simplicity: the compact header and straightforward structure make it trivial to parse, generate, and stream programmatically. The built-in mu-law option provides another benefit, delivering reasonable voice quality at just 8 KB per second — half the rate of 16-bit uncompressed audio — invaluable when storage and bandwidth were scarce. Although modern formats have largely supplanted AU in consumer applications, it retains a foothold in scientific computing and audio processing pipelines where minimal overhead and reliable cross-platform behavior are valued.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert CAF to AU?

While CAF handles large recordings well, it lacks cross-platform support. AU opens your audio to a wider audience.

What programs can open AU?

Use Audacity, VLC, SoX, Java applications, UNIX audio tools to play or edit AU recordings. These tools offer reliable compatibility with the format.

Will I lose audio quality in the conversion?

Quality depends on the codec. If AU uses lossy encoding, minor data loss occurs. Lossless targets preserve the original CAF audio faithfully.

Does the converter support batch CAF conversion?

Absolutely. You can upload a batch of CAF files and convert them all to AU together, saving significant time on large collections.

What happens to my files after conversion?

Your original CAF is deleted as soon as conversion ends. The resulting AU is available for download and automatically removed within 24 hours.

Do I need to install anything?

No installation needed. The CAF to AU converter is fully browser-based — open the page, upload your audio, and download the result.
