About formats

PPTX is the default file format for Microsoft PowerPoint presentations since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML (OOXML) standard published as ECMA-376 and later adopted as ISO/IEC 29500. A PPTX file is a ZIP archive containing XML documents that describe slide content, layouts, themes, relationships, and metadata in a structured, human-inspectable hierarchy. Each slide, slide layout, and slide master is stored as a separate XML part, with media assets (images, audio, video) and embedded objects kept in dedicated directories within the package. The XML foundation enables programmatic creation and manipulation of presentations using standard XML tools and libraries — developers can generate, modify, or extract content from PPTX files without requiring PowerPoint itself. One significant advantage is openness and interoperability: the fully documented OOXML specification allows any software to read and write PPTX files, and the format is supported by LibreOffice Impress, Google Slides, Apple Keynote, and numerous other tools. Built-in ZIP compression is another practical strength — PPTX files are typically 50-75% smaller than equivalent PPT files, reducing storage and transfer costs. The format supports all modern PowerPoint features including SmartArt, 3D models, morph transitions, embedded fonts, accessibility metadata, and co-authoring capabilities. PPTX has become the standard interchange format for presentation content worldwide.

SIX is a file extension for SIXEL (Six Pixel) graphics data, a bitmap graphics format developed by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) in 1983 and introduced with the LA50 dot matrix printer. SIXEL encodes images as a sequence of printable ASCII characters, where each character represents a column of six vertical pixels (a 'sixel') — the character's ASCII value minus 63 provides a 6-bit binary pattern, with each bit controlling one pixel in the vertical column. The encoding is structured as a series of sixel bands (each six pixels tall) across the image width, with control sequences for color selection (up to 256 registers with HLS or RGB specification), repeat counts (run-length encoding for efficiency), carriage return, and newline commands. SIXEL data is transmitted to the output device using DEC's standard escape sequence protocol, embedded within the text stream alongside regular character output. Originally designed for DEC's line of printers and later supported by DEC VT-series terminals (VT240, VT330, VT340), SIXEL has experienced a remarkable revival in modern terminal emulator software. One advantage is terminal-native image display: SIXEL allows images to be rendered directly within a text terminal session without requiring a graphical window system, enabling command-line tools to display graphs, photographs, and previews inline with text output. This capability has driven adoption in modern terminals like mlterm, xterm, WezTerm, and foot. SIX/SIXEL data can be generated by ImageMagick, libsixel, and chafa, and viewed in any SIXEL-capable terminal emulator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PPTX to SIX?

SIX lets you render slide content as terminal-displayable graphics — useful for command-line workflows, retro computing, and terminal-based presentations.

What software displays SIX images?

Terminal emulators with SIXEL support — xterm (with -ti vt340), mlterm, mintty, and WezTerm — can render SIX graphics directly in the console.

Is SIX the same as SIXEL?

Yes — SIX is simply an alternative file extension for the SIXEL bitmap format. Both use identical encoding developed by Digital Equipment Corporation.

Does SIX support color?

SIXEL supports up to 256 colors using a palette-based system. Your PPTX slide colors are mapped to the nearest available palette entries.

Is this conversion free?

PPTX to SIX conversion is free with Convertio. Paid plans provide increased limits for heavier usage.

What is SIXEL used for today?

SIXEL has seen a revival in modern terminals for inline image display, documentation rendering, and creative coding projects using terminal graphics.
