About formats

PPTX is the default file format for Microsoft PowerPoint presentations since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML (OOXML) standard published as ECMA-376 and later adopted as ISO/IEC 29500. A PPTX file is a ZIP archive containing XML documents that describe slide content, layouts, themes, relationships, and metadata in a structured, human-inspectable hierarchy. Each slide, slide layout, and slide master is stored as a separate XML part, with media assets (images, audio, video) and embedded objects kept in dedicated directories within the package. The XML foundation enables programmatic creation and manipulation of presentations using standard XML tools and libraries — developers can generate, modify, or extract content from PPTX files without requiring PowerPoint itself. One significant advantage is openness and interoperability: the fully documented OOXML specification allows any software to read and write PPTX files, and the format is supported by LibreOffice Impress, Google Slides, Apple Keynote, and numerous other tools. Built-in ZIP compression is another practical strength — PPTX files are typically 50-75% smaller than equivalent PPT files, reducing storage and transfer costs. The format supports all modern PowerPoint features including SmartArt, 3D models, morph transitions, embedded fonts, accessibility metadata, and co-authoring capabilities. PPTX has become the standard interchange format for presentation content worldwide.

PSD (Photoshop Document) is the native file format of Adobe Photoshop, the industry-standard raster image editor first released on February 19, 1990. PSD files preserve the complete editing state of a Photoshop project: all layers (raster, text, adjustment, shape, and smart object layers) with their positions, blending modes, opacity, and layer effects; layer masks and vector masks; alpha channels; spot color channels; paths; guides; slices; and the full undo history. The format supports images up to 30,000 x 30,000 pixels (PSB, the large document format, extends this to 300,000 x 300,000) in color modes including RGB, CMYK, Lab, Grayscale, Indexed, Duotone, and Multichannel, at 1, 8, 16, or 32 bits per channel. PSD files use a combination of RLE compression for individual layer data and store composite (flattened) preview images for quick display by applications that cannot parse the full layer structure. The format has become a de facto standard for professional creative workflows far beyond Photoshop itself — photographers, graphic designers, web developers, and video post-production artists exchange PSD files as the working format that preserves creative flexibility. One advantage is the non-destructive editing model: PSD preserves every layer, mask, adjustment, and effect as independently editable elements, allowing creative decisions to be revised at any point without starting over. The format's role as the interchange standard for the creative industry provides another core strength — PSD files can be opened by Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, Premiere Pro, as well as Affinity Photo, GIMP, Sketch, Figma, and Photopea, making it the lingua franca of visual design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PPTX to PSD?

PSD opens your slides in Photoshop for pixel-level editing — retouch graphics, adjust colors, add effects, or extract individual design elements.

What software opens PSD?

Adobe Photoshop is the native editor. GIMP, Affinity Photo, Photopea (online), and many other image editors also read PSD files.

Will layers be preserved?

The conversion renders slides as flat PSD images. For layered editing, you can use Photoshop to separate elements after opening the file.

Is PSD useful for print design?

PSD supports high resolution and precise color management. Converting PPTX to PSD is a practical step when slides need professional print preparation.

Is this converter free?

Convertio provides free PPTX to PSD conversion. Premium plans offer more capacity for users with heavier or more frequent conversion needs.

Can I convert multiple slides at once?

Yes — the converter processes your entire PPTX. Each slide renders as a separate PSD image that you can download individually.
