About formats

PPTX is the default file format for Microsoft PowerPoint presentations since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML (OOXML) standard published as ECMA-376 and later adopted as ISO/IEC 29500. A PPTX file is a ZIP archive containing XML documents that describe slide content, layouts, themes, relationships, and metadata in a structured, human-inspectable hierarchy. Each slide, slide layout, and slide master is stored as a separate XML part, with media assets (images, audio, video) and embedded objects kept in dedicated directories within the package. The XML foundation enables programmatic creation and manipulation of presentations using standard XML tools and libraries — developers can generate, modify, or extract content from PPTX files without requiring PowerPoint itself. One significant advantage is openness and interoperability: the fully documented OOXML specification allows any software to read and write PPTX files, and the format is supported by LibreOffice Impress, Google Slides, Apple Keynote, and numerous other tools. Built-in ZIP compression is another practical strength — PPTX files are typically 50-75% smaller than equivalent PPT files, reducing storage and transfer costs. The format supports all modern PowerPoint features including SmartArt, 3D models, morph transitions, embedded fonts, accessibility metadata, and co-authoring capabilities. PPTX has become the standard interchange format for presentation content worldwide.

DOCM is a macro-enabled document format for Microsoft Word, introduced with Office 2007 as part of the Office Open XML family. Structurally identical to DOCX — a ZIP archive containing XML parts for document content, styles, themes, and media — DOCM adds the ability to store and execute VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) macro code within the document. The separate .docm extension was a deliberate security measure: users and administrators can distinguish macro-containing files by extension alone, and group policies can restrict macro-enabled formats while allowing standard DOCX documents to open freely. DOCM files store VBA projects in a vbaProject.bin stream within the ZIP package alongside the same XML document content used by DOCX. Macros in Word documents enable automated report generation, custom form processing, document assembly from templates and data sources, and integration with external systems. One advantage is document-level automation — a DOCM file can include routines that populate content from databases, enforce formatting rules, validate fields before submission, or generate derivative documents automatically. The format preserves full compatibility with the OOXML specification, so all standard Word features — styles, tracked changes, comments, embedded media — work identically to DOCX. DOCM is supported by Microsoft Word on Windows and macOS, with macro execution limited to the desktop application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PPTX to DOCM?

DOCM gives you an editable Word document with macro support — ideal when you need to automate tasks on content extracted from presentations.

How do I open DOCM files?

Microsoft Word opens DOCM natively with full macro support. LibreOffice Writer can open it too, though VBA macro execution may be limited.

Does DOCM include macros automatically?

No — the conversion creates a macro-enabled container. You add your own VBA macros in Word after downloading the converted document.

Is DOCM different from DOCX?

Both share the same XML structure. DOCM additionally allows embedded VBA macros to run, while DOCX blocks macro execution by design.

Is this tool free?

PPTX to DOCM conversion is free on Convertio. Premium plans provide expanded file size limits and batch conversion for multiple files.

Will slide images appear in the document?

Images from your PPTX are included in the DOCM output. They are embedded within the document flow alongside the extracted text content.
