HDR Precision

EXR captures PPSX slides with floating-point color data — preserving lighting nuances and tonal range that 8-bit formats like JPEG and PNG cannot store.

Slides to VFX Assets

Move PPSX presentation graphics into the EXR pipeline for compositing, color grading, or layering within professional VFX and motion graphics tools.

Secure File Handling

Uploaded PPSX files are deleted right after processing completes. EXR output is auto-removed from servers within 24 hours.

About formats

PPSX (PowerPoint Slideshow XML) is the Open XML counterpart to the legacy PPS format, introduced by Microsoft with Office 2007. Like PPTX, a PPSX file is a ZIP archive containing XML parts that describe slides, layouts, themes, and media assets according to the Office Open XML specification. The distinguishing characteristic is behavioral: opening a PPSX file launches the presentation directly in full-screen slideshow mode, bypassing the editing environment. This makes PPSX the preferred format for distributing finalized presentations where the audience should experience the content as a seamless visual narrative without exposure to the editing interface, slide sorter, or speaker notes panel. PPSX files support every visual feature available in PPTX including transitions, animations, embedded video and audio, hyperlinks, SmartArt, charts, and custom slide timings. One advantage is streamlined delivery — a PPSX file attached to an email or shared via a link opens as a polished presentation with a single click, requiring no instruction to the recipient. The XML-based foundation provides another benefit: PPSX files are typically much smaller than equivalent PPS files due to built-in ZIP compression, and their contents can be inspected or modified programmatically using standard XML tools. The format is supported for playback in PowerPoint, LibreOffice Impress, Google Slides (after upload), and various mobile presentation apps, ensuring broad cross-platform reach for distributed slide decks.

EXR is a high-dynamic-range raster image format developed by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) internally since 1999 and publicly released as open-source software in January 2003. OpenEXR was created to meet the demanding requirements of feature film visual effects compositing, where scenes routinely contain extreme brightness ranges — from deep shadows to specular highlights on water, metal, or light sources — that exceed the precision of 8-bit or 16-bit integer formats. EXR stores pixel data in 16-bit floating-point (half) or 32-bit floating-point per channel, providing over 30 stops of dynamic range with smooth precision across the entire luminance spectrum. The format supports an arbitrary number of channels (not just RGBA), tiled and scanline storage, multiple compression methods (lossless ZIP, lossy B44 and DWAA/DWAB for preview quality), multi-part files containing multiple views or layers, and deep pixel data where each pixel stores multiple depth-sorted samples for volumetric effects. One advantage is compositing fidelity: the floating-point precision means that color grading, exposure adjustments, lighting changes, and multi-layer compositing operations produce mathematically correct results without the banding, clipping, or quantization artifacts inherent in integer formats. EXR's adoption as the VFX industry standard is another core strength — it is the default interchange format for Foundry Nuke, Autodesk Flame, Blackmagic Fusion, Adobe After Effects, and every major 3D renderer, and its open-source C++ library is embedded in hundreds of production tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PPSX to EXR?

EXR is the VFX industry standard for HDR imagery. Converting slides to EXR lets you incorporate presentation visuals into compositing or 3D rendering workflows.

How do I open EXR images?

Adobe After Effects, Foundry Nuke, Blender, Photoshop, and DJV Imaging all open EXR natively. It is the go-to format in film and visual effects production.

What makes EXR special?

EXR supports 16-bit and 32-bit floating-point color channels, enabling an enormous dynamic range — far beyond what standard 8-bit formats can represent.

Are EXR files large?

EXR can be large due to high bit depth, but it supports multiple compression methods (ZIP, PIZ, DWAA) that reduce file size while preserving HDR data.

Is EXR useful outside of VFX?

EXR is also used in scientific visualization, architectural rendering, game asset development, and any field where precise color and lighting data matter.

Is PPSX to EXR conversion free?

Convertio provides free EXR conversion. Premium accounts offer larger uploads and faster queue access for professional workloads.
