About formats

PDF (Portable Document Format) was developed by Adobe Systems, co-founded by John Warnock and Charles Geschke, with the first version released on June 15, 1993. Built on a simplified PostScript imaging model, PDF encapsulates complete document descriptions — text with fonts, vector graphics, raster images, and interactive elements — in a self-contained file that renders identically across every platform, device, and printer. The format evolved through multiple versions, culminating in its adoption as international standard ISO 32000-1 in 2008 (PDF 1.7) and ISO 32000-2 in 2017 (PDF 2.0), ensuring long-term vendor independence. PDF supports an extraordinary range of capabilities: digital signatures, form fields, annotations, bookmarks, accessibility tags, encryption, JavaScript, multimedia embedding, 3D content, and archival-specific profiles (PDF/A). One advantage is absolute visual fidelity — a PDF document looks exactly the same whether opened on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, or Android, printed on any printer, or viewed decades after creation. Universal software support is another core strength: PDF viewers are built into every major operating system and web browser, and the format is read by hundreds of applications worldwide. Specialized ISO profiles like PDF/A (archival), PDF/X (print production), and PDF/UA (accessibility) extend the format's reach into regulated industries. PDF has become the global standard for document exchange in business, government, legal, academic, and publishing contexts.

PGM (Portable Graymap) is the grayscale member of the Netpbm image format family, created by Jef Poskanzer in 1988 as part of the Pbmplus toolkit for Unix systems. PGM stores single-channel intensity images where each pixel holds a gray value from 0 (black) to a user-specified maximum (typically 255 for 8-bit or 65535 for 16-bit). The format exists in ASCII (magic number P2), where pixel values are written as decimal text numbers separated by whitespace, and binary (magic number P5), where values are stored as raw bytes. Both variants begin with a header specifying the magic number, width, height, and maximum gray value. PGM was designed as the grayscale intermediate in Netpbm's convert-process-convert pipeline philosophy: source images from any format are converted to PGM, processed using Netpbm's extensive command-line tool library, then converted to the target format. One advantage is format transparency — the ASCII variant makes image data directly readable by humans and trivially processable by text tools like awk and grep, invaluable for debugging and education. The scientific and computer vision community's adoption is another strength: PGM's straightforward single-channel representation makes it a natural format for image analysis algorithms, and many academic papers and course materials use PGM examples. The format is supported by ImageMagick, GIMP, and countless image processing libraries, and remains standard input for many research tools and benchmarks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PDF to PGM?

PGM is a simple grayscale format in the Netpbm family — great for image analysis, OCR preprocessing, and scientific computing tasks.

How do I open a PGM file?

PGM files open in GIMP, IrfanView, XnView, ImageMagick, and virtually any Linux image viewer. Most Netpbm tools read it natively.

Does PGM preserve color information?

No — PGM stores only grayscale values. If you need color, use PPM instead. PGM is ideal when you only need luminance data.

Can I batch convert several PDFs?

Convertio supports uploading multiple PDFs in one session, converting each to PGM images in a single batch operation.

Is PDF to PGM conversion free?

Yes, it is free on Convertio for standard use. Premium plans are available for users who need higher limits.

Does it work offline?

No, Convertio requires an internet connection — all conversion is processed on cloud servers for speed and compatibility.
