About formats

PDF (Portable Document Format) was developed by Adobe Systems, co-founded by John Warnock and Charles Geschke, with the first version released on June 15, 1993. Built on a simplified PostScript imaging model, PDF encapsulates complete document descriptions — text with fonts, vector graphics, raster images, and interactive elements — in a self-contained file that renders identically across every platform, device, and printer. The format evolved through multiple versions, culminating in its adoption as international standard ISO 32000-1 in 2008 (PDF 1.7) and ISO 32000-2 in 2017 (PDF 2.0), ensuring long-term vendor independence. PDF supports an extraordinary range of capabilities: digital signatures, form fields, annotations, bookmarks, accessibility tags, encryption, JavaScript, multimedia embedding, 3D content, and archival-specific profiles (PDF/A). One advantage is absolute visual fidelity — a PDF document looks exactly the same whether opened on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, or Android, printed on any printer, or viewed decades after creation. Universal software support is another core strength: PDF viewers are built into every major operating system and web browser, and the format is read by hundreds of applications worldwide. Specialized ISO profiles like PDF/A (archival), PDF/X (print production), and PDF/UA (accessibility) extend the format's reach into regulated industries. PDF has become the global standard for document exchange in business, government, legal, academic, and publishing contexts.

JPS (JPEG Stereo) is a stereoscopic 3D image format that stores a left-eye and right-eye view pair within a single JPEG-compressed file, developed by VRex, Inc. around 1997 for use with stereoscopic displays and viewers. A JPS file is technically a standard JPEG file containing a side-by-side stereo pair — the left and right perspective images are placed horizontally adjacent within a single frame, with the full image width being twice the individual view width. The file uses standard JPEG compression and can be opened by any JPEG-compatible viewer (which will show the side-by-side pair as a single wide image), but stereo-aware applications parse the image into its left and right components for proper 3D presentation. JPS files can be viewed with dedicated stereoscopic software, anaglyph viewers (generating red-cyan images for colored glasses), autostereoscopic displays, VR headsets, and hardware like NVIDIA 3D Vision or passive 3D monitors. The format gained renewed interest with the consumer 3D photography boom of the late 2000s and early 2010s, when cameras like the Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W1/W3 captured stereo pairs natively. One advantage is backward compatibility: because JPS uses standard JPEG encoding, the files work with existing JPEG infrastructure — they can be transmitted, stored, thumbnailed, and even viewed (as flat side-by-side images) without any special software. The format's simplicity is another practical strength — no specialized container or codec is required, and any tool that can crop and display JPEG images can extract individual views. JPS files are supported by StereoPhoto Maker, ImageMagick, and various 3D photo viewers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PDF to JPS?

JPS is a stereoscopic JPEG format. Converting PDF visuals to JPS lets you present document graphics on 3D displays or in VR viewing applications.

What opens JPS files?

JPS files open in StereoPhoto Maker, 3D photo viewers, and media players with stereo support. Standard image viewers show them as side-by-side pairs.

Is JPS related to JPG?

JPS uses JPEG compression but stores a stereo image pair — left and right views side by side. Standard JPG viewers display the combined image.

Does the conversion create a true 3D image?

The converter produces a JPS container from your PDF content. True 3D depth requires source material with stereo pairs or depth information.

Is PDF to JPS conversion free?

Yes, Convertio provides free PDF to JPS conversion. Premium accounts offer more capacity and faster processing times.

What devices display JPS in 3D?

JPS images render in 3D on stereo monitors, 3D TVs, VR headsets, and anaglyph viewers. Dedicated 3D photo software also handles them.
