About formats

PDF (Portable Document Format) was developed by Adobe Systems, co-founded by John Warnock and Charles Geschke, with the first version released on June 15, 1993. Built on a simplified PostScript imaging model, PDF encapsulates complete document descriptions — text with fonts, vector graphics, raster images, and interactive elements — in a self-contained file that renders identically across every platform, device, and printer. The format evolved through multiple versions, culminating in its adoption as international standard ISO 32000-1 in 2008 (PDF 1.7) and ISO 32000-2 in 2017 (PDF 2.0), ensuring long-term vendor independence. PDF supports an extraordinary range of capabilities: digital signatures, form fields, annotations, bookmarks, accessibility tags, encryption, JavaScript, multimedia embedding, 3D content, and archival-specific profiles (PDF/A). One advantage is absolute visual fidelity — a PDF document looks exactly the same whether opened on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, or Android, printed on any printer, or viewed decades after creation. Universal software support is another core strength: PDF viewers are built into every major operating system and web browser, and the format is read by hundreds of applications worldwide. Specialized ISO profiles like PDF/A (archival), PDF/X (print production), and PDF/UA (accessibility) extend the format's reach into regulated industries. PDF has become the global standard for document exchange in business, government, legal, academic, and publishing contexts.

JP2 (JPEG 2000 Part 1) is an image format based on the JPEG 2000 compression standard, developed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group and published as ISO/IEC 15444-1 in December 2000 as the successor to the original JPEG standard. Unlike JPEG's block-based discrete cosine transform, JPEG 2000 uses discrete wavelet transform (DWT) compression, which eliminates the characteristic 8x8 block artifacts visible in highly compressed JPEG images and instead produces a smooth, gradual quality degradation. The format supports both lossy and lossless compression within the same codestream, along with features absent from original JPEG: 16-bit and higher bit-depth images, arbitrary numbers of color channels, alpha transparency, region-of-interest coding (allocating more bits to important areas), and progressive quality or resolution refinement from a single compressed stream. One advantage is superior image quality at low bit rates — JPEG 2000 produces visibly cleaner images than JPEG at equivalent file sizes, particularly below 0.5 bits per pixel where JPEG exhibits severe blocking. The progressive decoding capability is another strength: a single JP2 file can be decoded at any resolution or quality level without encoding multiple versions, valuable for remote sensing and medical imaging where the same image must serve both thumbnail browsing and full-resolution analysis. JP2 is the mandated format for digital cinema (DCI), the preferred format in geospatial data (GeoJP2), and widely adopted in cultural heritage digitization.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PDF to JP2?

JP2 offers better image quality than standard JPEG at comparable file sizes. It also supports lossless mode, making it popular for archival imaging.

What programs open JP2 files?

JP2 files open in IrfanView, XnView, Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, and web browsers like Safari. Chrome and Firefox support JP2 with varying coverage.

Is JP2 better than JPEG?

JPEG 2000 uses wavelet compression, delivering fewer artifacts — especially at low bitrates. It also supports lossless encoding and transparency.

Does the converter keep text sharp?

JP2 handles text-heavy content well. Wavelet compression preserves edge details better than block-based JPEG, so text stays crisp.

Is PDF to JP2 free on Convertio?

Free conversions are available to all users. Premium plans provide additional throughput and priority processing for heavy use.

Does PDF to JP2 conversion work on mobile?

Yes — the converter runs in any modern browser, including mobile devices. No app installation required, just open the page and upload.
