About formats

PDF (Portable Document Format) was developed by Adobe Systems, co-founded by John Warnock and Charles Geschke, with the first version released on June 15, 1993. Built on a simplified PostScript imaging model, PDF encapsulates complete document descriptions — text with fonts, vector graphics, raster images, and interactive elements — in a self-contained file that renders identically across every platform, device, and printer. The format evolved through multiple versions, culminating in its adoption as international standard ISO 32000-1 in 2008 (PDF 1.7) and ISO 32000-2 in 2017 (PDF 2.0), ensuring long-term vendor independence. PDF supports an extraordinary range of capabilities: digital signatures, form fields, annotations, bookmarks, accessibility tags, encryption, JavaScript, multimedia embedding, 3D content, and archival-specific profiles (PDF/A). One advantage is absolute visual fidelity — a PDF document looks exactly the same whether opened on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, or Android, printed on any printer, or viewed decades after creation. Universal software support is another core strength: PDF viewers are built into every major operating system and web browser, and the format is read by hundreds of applications worldwide. Specialized ISO profiles like PDF/A (archival), PDF/X (print production), and PDF/UA (accessibility) extend the format's reach into regulated industries. PDF has become the global standard for document exchange in business, government, legal, academic, and publishing contexts.

JBIG (Joint Bi-level Image experts Group) is a lossless image compression standard (ITU-T T.82) published in 1993, developed by a committee of experts drawn from the same international standards bodies that created JPEG. While the extension .jbig and .jbg refer to the same underlying compression standard, .jbig is the more explicit form commonly used in software that handles the raw JBIG-compressed datastream. The compression algorithm centers on context-dependent arithmetic coding: before encoding each pixel, the encoder examines a configurable template of 10 to 16 nearby pixels (a mix of neighbors from the current and previous lines) to determine a context — one of thousands of possible local pixel configurations. Each context maintains its own adaptive probability estimate that is continually updated as encoding proceeds, allowing the coder to exploit the statistical patterns unique to each image region. This approach handles text, line art, halftoned photographs, and mixed-content pages with a single algorithm, achieving consistently better compression than the fixed Huffman tables of Group 3 or the simpler prediction model of Group 4. A later revision, JBIG2 (T.88), added pattern matching and lossy modes for even higher compression, but the original JBIG remains widely deployed. One advantage is the algorithm's adaptiveness: unlike Group 3/4 codecs that use fixed statistical models, JBIG continuously learns the characteristics of each specific image as it encodes, providing near-optimal compression across widely varying content types. The standard is embedded in many multifunction printers and document scanners for internal image handling. JBIG files are processable by ImageMagick, jbigkit, and enterprise document imaging systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert PDF to JBIG?

JBIG compression is purpose-built for bi-level images like scanned text. Converting PDF to JBIG yields extremely compact files for document storage.

What software reads JBIG files?

JBIG files are supported by ImageMagick, jbigkit command-line tools, and enterprise document management systems designed for archival workflows.

Is JBIG the same as JBG?

JBG is the common file extension for JBIG-compressed images. They use the same underlying compression algorithm for bi-level image data.

Does the conversion handle color PDFs?

JBIG targets monochrome output. Color PDFs are rendered to black-and-white during conversion — ideal for text documents and forms.

Is PDF to JBIG conversion free?

Free conversions are available on Convertio. Premium plans offer expanded limits and priority queuing for larger workloads.

When should I use JBIG over TIFF?

Choose JBIG when file size matters most — it compresses bi-level document pages more efficiently than standard TIFF Group 3 or Group 4 encoding.
