About formats

OXPS (Open XPS) is a fixed-layout document format standardized as ECMA-388 in June 2009, representing an evolution of Microsoft's original XPS specification. The format packages fixed-layout pages, fonts, images, and metadata in a ZIP-based Open Packaging Conventions container — the same packaging framework used by DOCX, XLSX, and other Office Open XML formats. Each page is described using an XML markup language that specifies paths, glyphs, images, and canvas elements with precise coordinates, producing documents that render identically regardless of the viewing device or printer. OXPS incorporated several changes from the original XPS: the use of JPEG XR for high dynamic range images, support for the Open Packaging Conventions 2nd edition, and alignment with the Ecma standardization process. Windows 8 and later generate OXPS (rather than XPS) when printing to the Microsoft XPS Document Writer. One advantage is standards-based document fidelity — as an Ecma standard, OXPS provides a vendor-neutral, fully specified format for documents that must look identical everywhere they are rendered, essential for legal filings, regulatory submissions, and archival records. The fixed-layout model is another strength: unlike reflowable formats, OXPS documents preserve exact page composition including precise glyph positioning and vector graphics. Built-in support in Windows and the .NET framework provides native viewing and creation capabilities without third-party software.

PPM (Portable Pixmap) is the full-color member of the Netpbm image format family, created by Jef Poskanzer in 1988 as part of the Pbmplus toolkit for Unix systems. PPM stores RGB color images where each pixel contains three values (red, green, blue) ranging from 0 to a specified maximum, typically 255 for 8-bit-per-channel or 65535 for 16-bit-per-channel color. The format exists in ASCII (magic number P3), where pixel values are written as decimal numbers in row-major order, and binary (magic number P6), where values are stored as raw bytes for compact representation. Both variants begin with a plain-text header: magic number, width, height, and maximum color value. PPM completes the Netpbm trio alongside PBM (monochrome) and PGM (grayscale), serving as the universal color image intermediate in the convert-process-convert pipeline that defined Netpbm's approach to format interoperability. One advantage is absolute simplicity — PPM requires no compression libraries, container parsing, or metadata handling, making it the easiest full-color format to implement from scratch in any programming language. The format's widespread adoption in scientific computing and computer graphics education is another practical strength: PPM serves as a standard I/O format for ray tracers, image processing coursework, and visualization tools where implementation simplicity outweighs file size concerns. PPM is supported by ImageMagick, GIMP, and virtually all image processing libraries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert OXPS to PPM?

PPM is the standard full-color Netpbm format — widely used in Unix image processing pipelines, scripting workflows, and academic research where simple formats are preferred.

What software reads PPM files?

Netpbm tools, GIMP, ImageMagick, and virtually all Linux image viewers handle PPM natively. It is the de facto interchange format for color images in Unix systems.

Is PPM a color or grayscale format?

PPM stores full-color RGB pixel data. For grayscale, the equivalent Netpbm format is PGM; for monochrome, PBM. PNM automatically selects the right type.

How quickly does OXPS to PPM conversion finish?

Cloud servers generate PPM output from OXPS in seconds. The uncompressed format is quick to encode, making the conversion fast even for detailed document pages.

Is OXPS to PPM conversion free?

Yes — Convertio provides free OXPS to PPM conversion for standard files. Premium plans add batch processing and expanded capacity for heavy processing workloads.

Can I convert multiple OXPS files to PPM at once?

Yes — upload several OXPS documents and convert them all to PPM simultaneously, making it efficient to prepare batches of color images for pipeline processing.
