About formats

PEF (Pentax Electronic Format) is the proprietary RAW image format used by Pentax digital SLR and mirrorless cameras, introduced in 2003 with the *ist D — Pentax's first digital SLR — and continuing through the current K-mount and medium-format 645 lineup. PEF files capture the unprocessed 12-bit or 14-bit readout from the camera's CMOS sensor in its native Bayer mosaic pattern, stored in a TIFF-based container with Huffman-coded lossless compression. The format includes embedded JPEG previews at multiple sizes, comprehensive EXIF metadata, and Pentax-specific MakerNote tags that record Custom Image mode settings, Shake Reduction (SR) gyroscope data, lens identification from the K-mount electronic interface, and the camera's Auto Level correction parameters. Pentax cameras are notable for their weather-sealed construction and compatibility with the vast legacy of K-mount lenses dating back to 1975, and PEF files from these bodies can include manual lens metadata entered through the camera's menu system. One advantage is the preservation of Pentax's distinctive color rendering — the brand's Custom Image modes (Bright, Natural, Reversal Film, Bleach Bypass, etc.) are stored as metadata rather than applied to the raw data, allowing photographers to explore different rendering interpretations during post-processing while the original sensor capture remains untouched. The format's longevity is another strength: PEF files from every Pentax DSLR are supported by Adobe Lightroom, Capture One, dcraw, RawTherapee, Pentax's own Digital Camera Utility, and other modern RAW processors.

RAS (Sun Raster) is a raster image format developed by Sun Microsystems for their SunOS and Solaris Unix workstations, dating to approximately 1982. Sun Raster files store 2D bitmap images with support for 1-bit monochrome, 8-bit indexed color (with a color map), 24-bit true color (BGR byte order), and 32-bit XBGR (with an unused alpha byte). The format uses a 32-byte header containing a magic number (0x59a66a95), width, height, bit depth, data length, raster type (indicating compression), color map type, and color map length, followed by the optional color map data and the pixel data. RAS supports three encoding modes: standard (uncompressed, with each scanline padded to a 16-bit boundary), byte-encoded (run-length encoded using a simple escape-code scheme), and RGB (uncompressed with RGB rather than BGR byte order). Sun Raster was the native image format for Sun's window system and later the OpenWindows desktop environment, serving as the standard format for screenshots, icons, backgrounds, and application graphics on Sun workstations throughout the 1980s and 1990s. One advantage is the format's representation of Unix workstation computing heritage: Sun Raster files from the SunOS/Solaris era document the visual culture of an important computing platform that drove advances in networking, multiprocessing, and graphics workstation design. The format's straightforward structure is another practical strength — the 32-byte header and simple encoding make RAS files easy to parse and convert, even with custom code. RAS files are supported by ImageMagick, GIMP, XnView, and other image processing tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the reasons to convert PEF to RAS?

PEF files from Pentax DSLRs store rich tonal data that requires specialized tools — converting to RAS makes them accessible on any device or platform.

How do I open a RAS file?

Compatible apps include IrfanView, XnView, GIMP, and Solaris/Unix image viewers.

Does converting PEF to RAS affect quality?

The conversion preserves visual quality as closely as the target format allows. RAS output maintains the essential detail from your original PEF image.

Is PEF to RAS conversion free?

Yes — basic PEF to RAS conversion is free. If you need to process larger batches or bigger files, premium options are available.

How long are converted files stored?

Convertio keeps converted files for up to 24 hours. You can download your RAS anytime within that window — files are purged after.

Do I need to install software?

No software needed. The conversion engine runs server-side — you just upload your PEF through the browser and get the RAS back.
