About formats

PEF (Pentax Electronic Format) is the proprietary RAW image format used by Pentax digital SLR and mirrorless cameras, introduced in 2003 with the *ist D — Pentax's first digital SLR — and continuing through the current K-mount and medium-format 645 lineup. PEF files capture the unprocessed 12-bit or 14-bit readout from the camera's CMOS sensor in its native Bayer mosaic pattern, stored in a TIFF-based container with Huffman-coded lossless compression. The format includes embedded JPEG previews at multiple sizes, comprehensive EXIF metadata, and Pentax-specific MakerNote tags that record Custom Image mode settings, Shake Reduction (SR) gyroscope data, lens identification from the K-mount electronic interface, and the camera's Auto Level correction parameters. Pentax cameras are notable for their weather-sealed construction and compatibility with the vast legacy of K-mount lenses dating back to 1975, and PEF files from these bodies can include manual lens metadata entered through the camera's menu system. One advantage is the preservation of Pentax's distinctive color rendering — the brand's Custom Image modes (Bright, Natural, Reversal Film, Bleach Bypass, etc.) are stored as metadata rather than applied to the raw data, allowing photographers to explore different rendering interpretations during post-processing while the original sensor capture remains untouched. The format's longevity is another strength: PEF files from every Pentax DSLR are supported by Adobe Lightroom, Capture One, dcraw, RawTherapee, Pentax's own Digital Camera Utility, and other modern RAW processors.

OTB (Over-the-Air Bitmap) is a monochrome image format developed by Nokia as part of their Smart Messaging specification in 1997, designed for transmitting small graphics — operator logos, group graphics, and picture messages — to Nokia mobile phones via SMS. OTB files contain 1-bit (black and white) images at small fixed resolutions, typically 72x14 pixels for operator logos and 72x28 pixels for group graphics, encoded in a compact binary format suitable for embedding within the payload of SMS text messages. The format uses a simple structure: a header byte indicating whether the image is an operator logo or group graphic, width and height values, and the raw bitmap data where each bit represents one pixel packed eight per byte. The extremely tight format — designed to fit within a single SMS message (140 bytes maximum payload, shared with addressing overhead) — reflects the severe constraints of mobile communication in the late 1990s. Nokia's Smart Messaging system was one of the first commercial implementations of rich content delivery to mobile phones, and OTB images represented the entire visual content capability of Nokia handsets before MMS and mobile data browsing arrived. One advantage is the format's historical role as a pioneer of mobile visual messaging: OTB images were among the first graphics that ordinary consumers could send to each other's phones, predating MMS, camera phones, and smartphones by nearly a decade. The format's minimal footprint is another characteristic — entire images fit in a few dozen bytes, reflecting an era of extreme bandwidth constraints. OTB files are supported by ImageMagick, various Nokia phone management tools, and specialty mobile format utilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the benefit of converting PEF to OTB?

Pentax PEF files hold unprocessed sensor data that few applications recognize natively — transformation to OTB opens up sharing and editing options.

Which apps support OTB?

OTB works with mobile development tools, IrfanView, and XnView.

How fast is the PEF to OTB conversion?

Conversion typically takes just a few seconds — PEF images are processed on powerful servers and the OTB output is ready almost immediately.

Does converting PEF to OTB affect quality?

Your PEF image data is processed carefully during conversion. The resulting OTB retains the maximum quality the target format can support.

Is PEF to OTB conversion free?

Converting PEF to OTB is free at Convertio. For heavier workloads or extra features, paid plans provide additional capacity.

Does the converter work on all devices?

Yes — the PEF to OTB converter runs entirely in your browser. It works on Windows, macOS, Linux, tablets, and smartphones with no software installs.
