About formats

DOTX is the Open XML template format for Microsoft Word, introduced with Office 2007. A DOTX file is a ZIP archive containing XML parts that define document styles, page layout defaults, theme colors, theme fonts, numbering formats, boilerplate content, headers, footers, and other elements that establish a reusable document foundation. When applied, a DOTX template creates a new DOCX document inheriting the template's complete formatting system. The XML-based structure provides advantages over the legacy DOT format: templates can be inspected and modified using standard XML tools, individual components (styles, themes) are cleanly separated into dedicated files, and ZIP compression yields smaller file sizes. One advantage is modular design management — DOTX templates encapsulate a complete formatting identity as a distributable package, and the XML architecture makes it straightforward to update specific elements like color schemes or font definitions without rebuilding the entire template. Broad compatibility is another strength: DOTX templates work in Word on Windows and macOS, LibreOffice Writer, and online platforms including Google Docs (with conversion). The format integrates with Word's template management system and organizational template libraries via SharePoint, enabling centralized document governance across large teams. DOTX has become the standard for distributing document formatting frameworks in corporate, academic, and publishing environments.

WBMP (Wireless Bitmap) is a monochrome (1-bit, black and white) image format defined as part of the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) specification, developed by the WAP Forum (later consolidated into the Open Mobile Alliance) around 1998. The format was designed for the extremely constrained mobile devices of the late 1990s and early 2000s — phones with small monochrome screens, minimal processing power, and narrow bandwidth GSM data connections. WBMP uses the simplest possible encoding: a type identifier byte (always 0 for the only defined type), width and height encoded as multi-byte integers using a variable-length scheme, and the raw pixel data where each bit represents one pixel (0 for white, 1 for black) packed eight per byte. There is no compression, no metadata, and no color — the format is purely a minimal container for delivering small monochrome graphics to WAP-era mobile browsers. One advantage was extreme efficiency on constrained devices — WBMP images could be decoded with virtually zero CPU overhead and minimal memory, critical on early mobile hardware running at single-digit megahertz clock speeds. The tiny file sizes are another strength: a typical WBMP icon occupied just a few hundred bytes, practical for transfer over 9.6 kbps GSM data channels. While the WAP ecosystem has been entirely superseded by modern mobile web browsers capable of rendering full-color JPEG, PNG, and WebP images, WBMP files remain encountered in archived mobile content from that transitional era.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert DOTX to WBMP?

WBMP is a monochrome format designed for mobile WAP browsers — useful for creating ultra-lightweight images for constrained devices.

What opens WBMP files?

WAP browsers, GIMP, ImageMagick, IrfanView, and specialized mobile development tools can open and process WBMP image files.

Is WBMP color or monochrome?

WBMP is strictly monochrome (black and white). Template content converts to a 1-bit image — best for simple text-heavy pages.

Can I batch convert DOTX to WBMP?

Yes — upload several DOTX files and render all pages as WBMP images in a single Convertio session.

Is this conversion free?

Basic conversions are free. Premium plans expand limits for users with frequent or specialized mobile image conversion needs.

Is WBMP still used?

WBMP is a legacy mobile format from the WAP era. It is occasionally used in embedded systems and IoT devices with limited displays.
