About formats

SXW is the word processing document format used by StarOffice 6.0 and OpenOffice.org 1.0, developed by Sun Microsystems and released in 2002. The format was one of the first mainstream office document formats to adopt an XML-based architecture, packaging document content, styles, metadata, and embedded media in a ZIP archive — a structural approach that directly influenced the later OpenDocument Format (ODF). The content.xml file describes the document body using XML elements for paragraphs, headings, lists, tables, footnotes, and inline formatting, while styles.xml defines the styling rules and meta.xml carries document properties. SXW represented a significant milestone in open-source office software, demonstrating that a non-proprietary XML format could handle the full range of word processing features including change tracking, indexes, cross-references, and complex page layouts. One advantage was transparency and openness — the XML structure made document content inspectable, transformable, and processable using standard tools, a sharp contrast to the opaque binary formats dominant at the time. The format's role as a technological precursor to the ODF standard is another historical significance: the OASIS OpenDocument Technical Committee used the OpenOffice.org XML format (including SXW) as the starting point for developing ODF 1.0. While SXW was superseded by ODT with OpenOffice.org 2.0 in 2005, existing SXW documents can be opened by LibreOffice, Apache OpenOffice, and document conversion tools.

EXR is a high-dynamic-range raster image format developed by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) internally since 1999 and publicly released as open-source software in January 2003. OpenEXR was created to meet the demanding requirements of feature film visual effects compositing, where scenes routinely contain extreme brightness ranges — from deep shadows to specular highlights on water, metal, or light sources — that exceed the precision of 8-bit or 16-bit integer formats. EXR stores pixel data in 16-bit floating-point (half) or 32-bit floating-point per channel, providing over 30 stops of dynamic range with smooth precision across the entire luminance spectrum. The format supports an arbitrary number of channels (not just RGBA), tiled and scanline storage, multiple compression methods (lossless ZIP, lossy B44 and DWAA/DWAB for preview quality), multi-part files containing multiple views or layers, and deep pixel data where each pixel stores multiple depth-sorted samples for volumetric effects. One advantage is compositing fidelity: the floating-point precision means that color grading, exposure adjustments, lighting changes, and multi-layer compositing operations produce mathematically correct results without the banding, clipping, or quantization artifacts inherent in integer formats. EXR's adoption as the VFX industry standard is another core strength — it is the default interchange format for Foundry Nuke, Autodesk Flame, Blackmagic Fusion, Adobe After Effects, and every major 3D renderer, and its open-source C++ library is embedded in hundreds of production tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert SXW to EXR?

EXR is an HDR image format used in VFX and film — converting SXW to EXR is useful for compositing document pages in pipelines.

What opens EXR files?

Adobe Photoshop, Nuke, Blender, GIMP, and professional VFX tools all support OpenEXR files for high dynamic range imaging.

Does EXR preserve detail?

EXR supports high bit depth and HDR data, so the visual content of your SXW pages is captured with maximum detail.

Is this conversion free?

Standard SXW to EXR conversions are free on Convertio. Premium accounts unlock higher processing limits and priority queues.

Can I do this on any OS?

Yes — the web converter works in any modern browser on any operating system, from Windows to macOS to Linux to mobile.

How large are EXR files?

EXR files can be larger than JPEG due to HDR data. The format supports lossless and lossy compression options for balance.
