SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is an XML-based vector image format developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), with the 1.0 specification published as a Recommendation on September 4, 2001. Unlike binary vector formats, SVG describes shapes, paths, text, gradients, filters, and animations in human-readable XML markup that can be authored in a text editor, processed by scripting languages, and styled with CSS. The format supports both vector elements (lines, curves, polygons defined by mathematical coordinates) and embedded raster images, along with interactivity through JavaScript event handling and declarative animations via SMIL or CSS transitions. SVG is natively rendered by all modern web browsers without plugins, making it the standard format for resolution-independent graphics on the web — from icons and logos to interactive data visualizations and animated illustrations. A major advantage is infinite scalability: SVG graphics remain perfectly sharp on any display, from low-DPI monitors to ultra-high-resolution Retina screens, because rendering is computed from geometry rather than pixels. The text-based nature provides another core strength — SVG content is indexable by search engines, accessible to screen readers, and trivially manipulable via the DOM using standard web technologies.
