Broad Format Access

SK connects to 98+ output formats through 224 conversion directions — vectors, rasters, and design formats all accessible.

No Skencil Required

Convert SK drawings without installing Skencil or any Linux-specific tools. Upload and convert entirely through your browser on any platform.

Process Multiple Drawings

Have several SK drawings to convert? Upload them together and process the entire batch in one session with individual format choices.

Lightweight Vector Format

SK uses a clean, Python-based vector drawing structure that captures shapes, paths, and text with minimal overhead.

Secure by Design

Uploaded drawings are erased from servers right after conversion. Output files are automatically removed within 24 hours for full privacy.

Cloud-Powered Conversion

All rendering and format translation happens on remote servers. Your device contributes nothing to the process — no installs, no CPU usage.

About format

SK is the native file format of Skencil (originally named Sketch), a free vector graphics editor for Linux created by Bernhard Herzog, with the first public release on October 31, 1998. Skencil holds historical significance as one of the earliest full-featured vector drawing applications written almost entirely in Python, with only performance-critical rendering components implemented in C. The SK file format uses a text-based, Python-like syntax to describe document structure — pages, layers, groups, and individual graphic objects are represented as nested statements with parameters specifying coordinates, colors, line styles, and transformations. The format supports Bezier curves, rectangles, ellipses, text objects with font specifications, imported raster images, gradient and pattern fills, and hierarchical grouping with affine transforms. One advantage is human readability — SK files can be opened in any text editor, making it possible to inspect, modify, or generate artwork programmatically using simple scripts. The Python-native structure also provides a benefit for automation: since Skencil itself is a Python application, the file format integrates naturally with scripting workflows for batch processing and procedural graphic generation. While Skencil's development slowed after the mid-2000s, its SK format became the foundation for the sK1) project, which extended the format and continued active open-source vector graphics development. SK files remain convertible through sK1, UniConvertor, and other open-source tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert SK to standard vector formats?

SK is a Skencil-specific format with very limited software support. Converting to SVG or AI makes your drawings usable in Inkscape, Illustrator, and other mainstream editors.

What opens SK drawing files?

Skencil (formerly Sketch) on Linux is the primary application. The format is not supported by other vector editors, so conversion is usually necessary for sharing.

Can I get a raster image from SK?

Yes — convert SK to JPEG or PSD on Convertio for a pixel-based version of your drawing, suitable for web use or embedding in documents.

Is SK conversion free on convertio.co?

Standard conversions are free on Convertio. Premium plans are available for users who need higher throughput or more generous file size limits.

Does converting SK preserve the vector structure?

When converting to vector outputs like SVG or AI, Convertio maintains paths, shapes, and layer structure from your SK drawing.
