About formats

RW2 is the proprietary RAW image format used by Panasonic Lumix digital cameras, introduced in 2008 with the Lumix DMC-G1 — the world's first Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera — and used across the entire Lumix lineup including the full-frame S-series. RW2 files capture the unprocessed 12-bit or 14-bit readout from the camera's CMOS sensor in its native Bayer mosaic pattern, stored in a TIFF-based container with lossy or lossless compression options depending on the camera model. The format records extensive metadata through Panasonic's proprietary MakerNote tags, including lens identification for both native and adapted optics, body and lens firmware versions, image stabilization data from Panasonic's Dual I.S. system, and Photo Style settings (Standard, Vivid, Natural, L.Monochrome, Cinelike D/V, and others). RW2 files from video-centric models like the GH series also store the settings context for their renowned video capabilities, though the RAW files themselves are still-image captures. Panasonic cameras introduced several innovations — contrast-detect AF, DFD (Depth from Defocus) focusing, and Dual Native ISO — and the RW2 format preserves the data needed to leverage these technologies during post-processing. One advantage is the format's connection to Panasonic's imaging innovation: RW2 files from cameras like the GH5 and S1H preserve the sensor output from bodies at the intersection of stills and cinema, valued by hybrid shooters. The format is supported by Adobe Lightroom, Capture One, DxO, Panasonic's SILKYPIX-based RAW converter, dcraw, and RawTherapee.

JP2 (JPEG 2000 Part 1) is an image format based on the JPEG 2000 compression standard, developed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group and published as ISO/IEC 15444-1 in December 2000 as the successor to the original JPEG standard. Unlike JPEG's block-based discrete cosine transform, JPEG 2000 uses discrete wavelet transform (DWT) compression, which eliminates the characteristic 8x8 block artifacts visible in highly compressed JPEG images and instead produces a smooth, gradual quality degradation. The format supports both lossy and lossless compression within the same codestream, along with features absent from original JPEG: 16-bit and higher bit-depth images, arbitrary numbers of color channels, alpha transparency, region-of-interest coding (allocating more bits to important areas), and progressive quality or resolution refinement from a single compressed stream. One advantage is superior image quality at low bit rates — JPEG 2000 produces visibly cleaner images than JPEG at equivalent file sizes, particularly below 0.5 bits per pixel where JPEG exhibits severe blocking. The progressive decoding capability is another strength: a single JP2 file can be decoded at any resolution or quality level without encoding multiple versions, valuable for remote sensing and medical imaging where the same image must serve both thumbnail browsing and full-resolution analysis. JP2 is the mandated format for digital cinema (DCI), the preferred format in geospatial data (GeoJP2), and widely adopted in cultural heritage digitization.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the benefit of converting RW2 to JP2?

Panasonic's RW2 format preserves every detail from Lumix cameras but needs conversion to JP2 for broad compatibility across devices and apps.

Which apps support JP2?

JP2 works with IrfanView, XnView, Photoshop (with plugin), GIMP, and Kakadu.

Does converting RW2 to JP2 affect quality?

The conversion preserves visual quality as closely as the target format allows. JP2 output maintains the essential detail from your original RW2 image.

Is RW2 to JP2 conversion free?

Yes — basic RW2 to JP2 conversion is free. If you need to process larger batches or bigger files, premium options are available.

Can I convert multiple RW2 files to JP2 at once?

Absolutely — Convertio lets you upload multiple RW2 files simultaneously. Each is converted to JP2 and available for individual download.

Do I need to install software?

No software needed. The conversion engine runs server-side — you just upload your RW2 through the browser and get the JP2 back.
