Modern Compression

HEIF delivers outstanding visual quality at about half the file size of JPG — the future of efficient image storage.

Template Rendered

Your DOTM pages are captured as high-fidelity HEIF images — every font, table, and layout detail preserved in the output.

Browser-Based

No image editing tools needed. Upload your DOTM in any browser, convert to HEIF, and download — completely online.

About formats

DOTM is a macro-enabled template format for Microsoft Word, introduced with Office 2007 as part of the Office Open XML family. DOTM combines the template functionality of DOTX — providing reusable styles, page layouts, boilerplate content, and formatting definitions — with the ability to embed VBA macro code that executes in documents created from the template. The format is a ZIP archive containing XML parts for styles, document defaults, and theme definitions, plus a vbaProject.bin stream for the VBA project. This combination enables organizations to distribute not just visual consistency but also functional automation: every document created from a DOTM template inherits both the formatting framework and programmatic capabilities. Common use cases include templates that auto-populate document fields from corporate directories, enforce naming conventions, generate tables of contents, insert dynamic headers with project metadata, or validate document structure before submission. One advantage is embedded workflow automation — a DOTM template can include initialization macros that configure the document environment, register custom ribbon commands, and connect to data sources the moment a new document is created from it. The distinct .dotm extension allows administrators to apply differentiated trust policies for macro-containing templates versus standard DOTX files. DOTM is supported exclusively in Microsoft Word desktop editions where VBA execution is available.

HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) is a container format for images and image sequences standardized by the Moving Picture Experts Group as ISO/IEC 23008-12, first published in 2015. HEIF is built on the ISO Base Media File Format (ISOBMFF, the same container used for MP4 video), providing a flexible structure that can hold single images, image collections, image sequences (like animations or bursts), and derived images with non-destructive editing operations. The container is codec-agnostic — while the most common implementation pairs HEIF with HEVC/H.265 compression (branded as HEIC by Apple), the standard also accommodates AV1 compression (creating the AVIF variant), H.266/VVC, and other future codecs. HEIF supports features that JPEG lacks: 10-bit and 12-bit color depth, wide color gamuts (Display P3, BT.2020), lossless compression, alpha transparency, depth maps, thumbnail images, and Exif/XMP metadata — all within a single file. Auxiliary image items can store computational photography data like depth maps, HDR gain maps, and semantic segmentation masks. One advantage is the format's future-proof architecture: by separating the container from the codec, HEIF can adopt newer, more efficient compression technologies without changing the file structure, metadata handling, or application-level APIs. The substantial compression improvement over JPEG is another core strength — HEVC-based HEIF typically achieves 40-50% file size reduction compared to JPEG at the same visual quality, beneficial for storage and bandwidth. HEIF is supported by Apple's ecosystem (iOS, macOS), Windows 10/11, Android 10+, GIMP, ImageMagick, and Adobe products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert DOTM to HEIF?

HEIF stores images with better compression than JPG while maintaining quality — a modern format supported by Apple and Android.

What opens HEIF files?

Apple devices, Windows 10+ with HEIF extension, Android 10+, and applications like GIMP and Photoshop handle HEIF images.

How does HEIF differ from HEIC?

HEIF is the broader standard; HEIC is a specific variant used by Apple. Both offer the same compression advantages.

Are macros stripped?

Completely — HEIF is an image-only format. No VBA macros or any code from the DOTM template exist in the output.

Is DOTM to HEIF free?

Yes — Convertio provides free DOTM to HEIF conversion. Premium users get higher resolution options and faster processing.

Does it work on any device?

The conversion runs in your browser on any platform. No special software or Apple hardware is needed to perform the conversion.
