About formats

DNG (Digital Negative) is an open, royalty-free RAW image format published by Adobe Systems on September 27, 2004, designed to address the proliferation of incompatible proprietary RAW formats from different camera manufacturers. Based on the TIFF/EP standard (ISO 12234-2), DNG provides a well-documented container for raw sensor data with standardized metadata tags that describe the camera's color filter array pattern, color calibration matrices, default rendering parameters, and opcodes for geometric corrections. The format supports both original raw mosaic data and linear (demosaiced) DNG, as well as lossy DNG using JPEG compression for smaller archive sizes when full quality is not critical. Adobe has iterated the specification through multiple versions, adding support for transparency maps, floating-point HDR data, enhanced color profiles, and semantic masks in newer revisions. One advantage is archival reliability — DNG's published, non-proprietary specification eliminates the risk that a camera manufacturer's format becomes unreadable when that company exits the market or drops support for older models, a concern that motivated Adobe's creation of the format. The format also enables embedded original RAW data, letting users convert their CR2, NEF, or ARW files to DNG while optionally keeping the original bits inside the DNG for reversibility. Broad ecosystem support is another strength: Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, and Camera Raw treat DNG as a first-class format, and many smartphone manufacturers (including Google and Apple for certain modes) output DNG natively.

HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) is a container format for images and image sequences standardized by the Moving Picture Experts Group as ISO/IEC 23008-12, first published in 2015. HEIF is built on the ISO Base Media File Format (ISOBMFF, the same container used for MP4 video), providing a flexible structure that can hold single images, image collections, image sequences (like animations or bursts), and derived images with non-destructive editing operations. The container is codec-agnostic — while the most common implementation pairs HEIF with HEVC/H.265 compression (branded as HEIC by Apple), the standard also accommodates AV1 compression (creating the AVIF variant), H.266/VVC, and other future codecs. HEIF supports features that JPEG lacks: 10-bit and 12-bit color depth, wide color gamuts (Display P3, BT.2020), lossless compression, alpha transparency, depth maps, thumbnail images, and Exif/XMP metadata — all within a single file. Auxiliary image items can store computational photography data like depth maps, HDR gain maps, and semantic segmentation masks. One advantage is the format's future-proof architecture: by separating the container from the codec, HEIF can adopt newer, more efficient compression technologies without changing the file structure, metadata handling, or application-level APIs. The substantial compression improvement over JPEG is another core strength — HEVC-based HEIF typically achieves 40-50% file size reduction compared to JPEG at the same visual quality, beneficial for storage and bandwidth. HEIF is supported by Apple's ecosystem (iOS, macOS), Windows 10/11, Android 10+, GIMP, ImageMagick, and Adobe products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert DNG to HEIF?

Modern HEIF compression outperforms older formats — converting from DNG gives you sharp, compact images ideal for storage-conscious workflows and mobile devices.

What programs open HEIF?

HEIF is supported by Apple Photos, macOS Preview, iOS, Windows Photos (with codec), and Adobe Lightroom.

Can I convert multiple DNG photos at once?

Yes — batch upload is supported. Queue several DNG images and convert them all to HEIF in one session without repeating the process.

Is DNG to HEIF conversion free on Convertio?

Standard DNG to HEIF conversions are free on convertio.co. Larger volumes or bigger images may benefit from a premium account for faster processing.

Does the converter work on mobile devices?

Absolutely. The DNG to HEIF converter works on phones and tablets — any device with a modern web browser and internet connection is sufficient.

Do I need to install software?

No installation required. The DNG to HEIF converter runs entirely in your web browser — just upload, convert, and download the result.
